We examine circular saw blade sizes UK. On the UK market you can buy circular saw blades in various different sizes. These are always measured by the diameter of the blade and usually are shown in millimeters (mm). They are made by a number of tool brands. The cutting depth will change slightly depending on the bore size of the blade. The larger the bore size, the smaller depth it will cut. Manufacturers use different size bores on their blades. The sizes we have used below are averages. It is also worth knowing that larger sized blades have large sized bores.

There are two types of circular saw, a standard circular saw or a mini circular saw. Mini circular saws will take smaller blades sizes as shown above. The most popular size is 85mm but always worth checking. The exact size is always determined by the size of your saw.

How to work out what circular saw blade size you need?

When trying to figure out what size of blade you need, the best starting point is to look closely at your circular saw.

Does it have a blade?

If there is a blade already on it then it will have a size usually shown as something like 165mm x 20mm. The 165mm refers to the diameter of the blade and the 20mm refers to the bore size. See the diagram below for a clear illustration.
If there is a blade then it will be easy to find the exact size. However sometimes that has worn off. That makes it slightly harder to figure out.

Finding the size with just the saw

The best way to do this is to make a note of the brand and model and then look it up online. As long as the saw is not too old, then you should be able to find it. If the saw is really old, then email the manufacturer as they will be able to help you. This is also a good time to explain what bore size means on a blade. On a circular saw the centre of the blade has a hole in it. This is known as the bore. That fits over a spindle of the saw which turns the blade. There are various bore sizes depending on the brand of your saw.

• What material are you cutting? – For most people this will be wood. However different types of blades are available that allow you to cut metal, plastic, non-ferrous and composite materials
• The depth of cut – This is the next really important selection criteria. The depth a blade can cut depends on the size of the blade. Blades are measured by their diameter. To calculate the cutting depth subtract the bore size from the blade size and divide by 2.
• The bore size – This is the hole size in the centre of the blade. It can be made smaller using reduction rings
• Number of teeth –  the more teeth the finer the cut will be
• Blade thickness – measured in millimetres and the thinner the blade the finer the cut.
• Tooth design – This varies depending on the material you want to cut. The gullet is the space between the teeth and the larger this gap the faster the cut will be. Likewise the blade and teeth tip material will also depend on the material being cut
• Expansion Slot –  This allows the blade to expand as it starts to heat up
