The compound miter or chop saw is one of the most versatile and useful tools available to the professional contractor. Still, there are significant differences between the ones available on the market. Here are a few suggestions for what to look for in your next chop saw to ensure that you get the most functional tool for the job and the best bang for your buck:

Good Portability – While almost every chop saw touts this as one of their primary benefits, some are quite unwieldy when it comes to transporting them and setting them up. A smart contractor should look for a chop saw that includes its own enclosed saw dust trap and durable side extensions.

Excess Power – There is no such thing, right? In fact, when the project schedule is tight and things need to get done in a hurry, an under-powered saw can drive you and your crew crazy. A saw with the right horsepower will keep everyone busy with little or no bottlenecks. Do not discount the value to your team – and to your bottom line! – on spending a little more for a more robust motor.

Enlarged Two-Dimensional Movement – Compound miter saws come with varying degrees of latitude. Do not settle for ones that cannot angle to at least 30 degrees and will not swivel to less than 48 degrees. The most useful ones, are good for almost 50 degrees on the angle and 52 degrees on the bias. In addition, chop saws that swivel both left and right are indispensable on a busy job site as “flipping” a piece of molding or wood is often confusing and can result in a multitude of mistakes.

Other Features – While not absolutely necessary for the experienced carpenter, add-ons like laser sight lines, built-in work piece clamps and variable speed dials for the motor let the master craftsman truly customize a top-notch chop saw to his/her individual needs.
