Mitre Saw Protractor Buying Guide UK

Mitre Saw Protractors – The Basics

Manual Protractor –  The majority of the protractors sold in the UK are a manual type. This simply means you set the protractor to measure the angle, and then take a reading from the scale. This scale can either be fixed or have a digital display. Some are made from plastic and others are made from metal.

When to use a protractor?

The fastest and easiest way to get an accurate mitre cut is to use a mitre saw. However these are expensive and are limited in use. Some people just don’t own a mitre saw, but they do own a handy circular saw, or a standard hand saw.

They can then use a form of protractor to set the angle for the cut, and then use their saw to make the actual cut. These are also useful for calculating angles of any shape other than the standard 45 degree mitre.

In the main though this would be used to measure angles, and then use that angle to set your mitre saw to the perfect angled cut. As a little side note, these are also useful for making sure the fence is square on your mitre saw.

Why Use a Mitre Saw Protractor?

They can kill two birds with one stone is why this tool is so useful. We all probably know that where two walls meet in our house, that the angle is around 90 degrees, as shown in the image above.

We have worked on houses for years and we can assure you that it is very rare you will find the perfect 90 degree angle. This tool will read this angle to perfection and also does the calculations for the mitre saw setting, and that makes it very useful, especially for perfectionists

Video On The Use of The Manual Protractor

So as you can see from the video below, the use of this tool guarantees an extremely accurate joint. You may well think a couple of degrees won’t make a big difference, but the reality is that it does. his is especially true if you are working with longer pieces of timber. For those that take immense pride in their work, this is a great way of ensuring high degrees of ultimate accuracy.

The inner scale is used for mitre cuts and the outer scale is used for single cuts.

There are a few different brands who make mitre saw protractors and they include:

  • Starrett
  • Trend
  • Faithfull
  • Silverline
  • Pike
  • Irwin
  • PKE

Protractor Use for Mitre Joints and Cuts?

You can also use this with band saws and table saws, and it is great if you plan on doing a lot of work involving a range of bevel cuts. You can also use this with a lathe and found it to be very useful.

For the person who simply does a little bit of DIY, you can skip this one out, as in my opinion you will probably never need it. We also found these really only work on the verticals and can not really be used on the horizontal planes. If you do a lot of work in loft conversion, then get one for your tool bag and you will not regret that decision.

Although protractors can be useful, if you plan on doing a lot of mitre or bevel cuts, then it is a better idea to buy a mitre saw. These make cutting these types of joints much easier and a great deal faster.
