There are many variables to consider when you are looking for the perfect bench grinder. So, what should you consider when shopping for grinders?

Firstly, you will want to select a bench grinder that fits your specific needs. The main things to look for when choosing a bench grinder are:

  • Horsepower
  • Size (Wheel Diameter)
  • Rotations per Minute (RPM)

Although smaller, less powerful machines are typically used for household applications, it is recommended that you purchase the largest machine you can afford. There are a few reasons why, in the case of bench grinders, bigger really is better –

Horsepower

One of the reasons to purchase the largest bench grinder you can, is because larger machines tend to have higher horsepower motors. The benefit of a higher horsepower motor is that you will have better success grinding a larger range of materials without slowing wheel RPM. This in turn will ensure that you are able to get a smoother, less jerky grind and give you more control over the equipment. Remember, large or small, bench grinders are dangerous power tools and having better control with your materials will help you use the grinder more safely.

Wheel Diameter

Another reason to purchase a larger grinder is because of the wheel size. Many smaller machines built for personal use have wheel diameters of only five or six inches. Larger machines have wheel diameters of eight or more inches. The benefit of a larger diameter wheel is that you will have a flatter surface to grind materials on. The flatter surface will give you a more even and straight grind. Larger wheels also tend to last a bit longer because they have a larger surface area to use.

Rotations Per Minute

The RPM is another thing to look at when choosing a bench grinder. The RPM tends to be a result of the horsepower and wheel diameter. Higher RPM is better to a point. You should consider what types of materials you will be grinding most frequently, as a very high RPM machine can overheat certain materials. Most grinder wheels rotate at a speed between 3,000 and 3,600 RPM.

Finally, in order to get the best power tools, it is important to use a reputable distributor to ensure the highest quality. Copper State Nut and Bolt Company can provide you with the equipment you need for any construction job.
